Game Recaps 2025-2026

2/4/26

We had our last competitive basketball game of the season against Elmwood Franklin this afternoon. Shaibam Abubaker had an outstanding game with rebounding, an assist, and showing plenty of aggressiveness on defense.  She also got scored her first basket and finished the game with four points!!!

Elmwood Franklin won the game 34-14. Daviangel Herrera-Yaguaracuto had 8 points and RJ Ormsby added 2.  Ben Lam made some good plays with dribbling and passing. Liliana Krieger and Vignesh Stradley put in a lot of minutes playing with confidence.

Overall we showed improvements compared to the past few games. There were more passing, better defense, and more space awareness on the floor so the coaches were pleased about it.

We will have Blue/Gold intrasquad scrimmage next week on 2/11 at 3:45 pm to end the season.

1/28/26

RJ Ormsby scored all of SMSD's points as the team lost to Tapestry School 41-8. We struggled against the opponent's quality shooting and lack of offensive rhythm. Having only one practice in last two weeks due to snow days certainly did not help. Hopefully we'll get some more practice before the last game of the season next Wednesday against Elmwood Franklin.

Highlights:

Malek Ahmad had an assist and Shaibam Abubaker helped the team with fantastic defense. Vignesh Stradley and Alejandro Mendez-Morales put in a lot of minutes during the game.

1/21/26

We were not able to hold any practice since our last game due to two snow days. That made it tougher to work on areas where the team can improve. Players were encouraged before the game to do their best and focus on where to position themselves on the floor.

We started the game against St Joseph's without one of our regular starters. SMSD was behind 23-6 at halftime and we set a goal of eclipsing the team points from the first half. They were able to score 10 in 2nd half. The final result was 29-16.

Daviangel Herrera-Yaguaracuto scored 10 points and RJ Ormsby had 6. Newcomer Alejandro Mendoza-Morales made his debut and did well. Aran Bishop had a great run going up the floor with the ball. Roshana Swabeyda, Malek Ahmad, and Shaneily Cruz-Villegas gave their best coming off the bench.

1/14/26

We had our first game in almost a month this afternoon against Aurora.  SMSD started out the game well leading 14-6 at halftime. Aurora made some adjustments and we struggled to get anything going after the half. Aurora won the game with a final score of 23-16.

Daviangel Herrera-Yaguaracuto had 10 points along with numerous steals and RJ Ormsby added 6 points. Tamana Ahmadi, Vignesh Stradley, and Shaibam Abubaker all put in solid minutes. Seyed Khaled Hashemi and Malek Ahmad made some contributions coming off the bench.

The Baby Bisons started the first of today's tripleheader in Thruway Classic against our main rival Rochester School for the Deaf.  The visitors brought a few players with imposing size which was intimidating. By the end of the game the coaches were happy to see our players stand their ground and try to take the ball away from their big players with pretty good rate of success.

The game started slow with RSD leading 10-4 after halftime.  During the second half it became a little more open but SMSD lost at the end 21-9.

Davinagel Herrera-Yaguaracuto scored 7 points and RJ Ormsby had the two other points.  Lily Krieger showed a lot of toughness today by coming back to court later after getting an eye injury.  Ben Lam, Vignesh Stradley, and Shaibam Abubaker played well on defense which was key in keeping our opponent's score low.

The highlight occurred after the game when both teams got together and had pizza.  They had fun socializing and all can't wait to play each other again.

Basketball is a complicated game. There are a lot of things that players need to be think about in a game such as dribbling and playing offense or defense. After all, the official basketball rules book is 196 pages long.

We had about one month of practice to prepare for our first game today.  The goal was to keep it simple by working on 4 things:  passing, shooting, defense, and rebounds. While there still is some work to do, the coaches were pleasantly surprised by how the players performed today.

Our opponent Aurora was shut out in the first half with score of 18-0. It presented an opportunity for rest of the players on the roster to see playing time in the 2nd half. The game ended with us winning 22-14.

RJ Ormsby led the way with 12 points and Daviangel Herrera-Yaguaracuto added 10. Analena Russi had the last two points. The team got some good hustle from Vignesh Stradley, Seyed Hashemi, and Shaibam Abubaker.
