Library Media Center

Welcome to the library! My name is Heather Karas and I am the Educational Computer Specialist at St. Mary's School for the Deaf. In the library, students will participate in a variety of library experiences, such as checking out books, learning the parts of a book, conducting research using texts, databases, and websites, completing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) activities that relate texts, and working on projects that encourage students to use creativity and apply skills that they have learned.

What do we do in the Library?

  • Child sitting in the floor with a laptop
Students create digital products that enhance learning, are of interest, and help them to solve problems to promote creativity.
  • Students drinking coffee with their teacher
The Coffee Talk at SMSD is very exciting for the students in Maryann's class. They love reading as a group and discussing what is happening in the book.
  • Students in front of a window with crafts on the sill
When our early elementary students are read a book, they love to work together using materials from our STEAM cart.
  • 2 Students with their handmade brochures
Our middle school students used a nonfiction text to create their very own brochure that highlights text features.
  • 3 Students in front of their fairy garden crafts
Our preschool and early elementary students enjoyed books that related with fairy gardens, flowers, and bugs during the month of March. Each class made a fairy garden of their own.
