    December 2019

Dear St. Mary’s School for the Deaf Stakeholders:

As we head into the holiday season, we know there is much to celebrate and be thankful for at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.

On Tuesday, November 5th, SMSD held a Mock Election which was very well attended by local candidates.  What a great teaching moment for our students.  Mayor Brown and local candidates from the city of Buffalo and Erie County were here to cast their votes.  All of these local officials are in full support of SMSD.

The Residential Thanksgiving Dinner was held on November 26th.  Our residential students helped serve a wonderful turkey dinner with all the trimmings.  Many SMSD staff and Board of Trustee members attended along with family members of the students.  We are thankful for all that we share at St. Mary’s.

On November 18th, SMSD held a Grand Opening and Dedication of the Senator Cathy Young Special Needs Classroom.  Senator Chris Jacobs, Karen Howard from Senator Patrick Gallivan’s office, Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes, Assemblywoman Karen McMahon, Deputy Mayor Ellen Grant and Frank Cammarata from the Erie County Office of Disabilities were all in attendance.  The students, staff and parents were all excited for this new educational space.  SMSD Director of Buildings & Grounds Kevin Spiegelhoff, did a tremendous job supervising the project.  A great celebration!

On November 27th, Conductor Jaman Dunn and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra kicked off the holiday season.  The BPO played to a full house in the Father Gallagher Gym.  Our annual Food Drive was a great success.  Over 100 bags of food were delivered to the Buffalo City Mission by our staff and students.  Thank you to all whom participated.

Winter recess begins Monday, December 23rd through Wednesday, January 1st, 2020. Students return to school on Thursday, January 2nd.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees, our staff, parents and, most importantly, our students, we wish you a very happy holiday season.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanza, Happy New Year!

    Child First!
