Occupational Therapy at St. Mary's School for the Deaf is aimed at helping our children to develop or maintain skills necessary to perform the role of student as independently as possible.
Therapeutic activities are used in the following areas to improve functional skill and allow the students to fully benefit from their educational experience:
- sensory processing
- postural control
- upper extremity control
- motor planning
- bilateral motor coordination,
- ocular motor control
- perceptual motor skills
- written communication
- self-care skills
- work behaviors
The occupational therapist may also recommend, provide, or fabricate assistive devices and other technology for students who require alternative means to accomplish education-related tasks.
Examples of these devices include, but are not limited to:
- computer adaptations
- wheelchairs or other mobility devices
- positioning devices
- splints
- adaptive devices to aid in dressing, writing, or mealtime activities
