Welcome back the Baby Bisons to the 2013-2014 Basketball season. We had our first game against Elmwood Franklin yesterday. The starting line consisted of Nick Barrus, and Givon Blackwell as guards, Elise Watson and Christopher Martin as forwards, and Isa Habeeb at Center. During the first half of the game this group seemed unstoppable. Isa Habeeb was a rebounding machine, and had 20 points in the game. Nick Barrus was like lightning on the court with 8 points, but got into some foul trouble. Christopher Martin had our remaining 5 points. We began substituting in to see how some of our rookie players played in the game. Moontaha Shalbi did a great job on defense and had a couple of rebounds. During the 4th quarter Elmwood Franklin made a comeback scoring 18 points. We subbed back in our starters and WON 33-30. We are very proud of the improvements the team has shown over the last three weeks, and will continue to practice hard. Please congratulate the team on a job well done, and come and support the Baby Bisons next week Wednesday, December 11th, 2013 against Tapestry.
The Baby Bisons played an exciting game against Tapestry. The first quarter started off a little slow with the score being 6-2. The Baby Bisons were feeling a little overwhelmed. After the quarter ended we told them to grab a drink and get their heads in the game. The team was ready to go. After the half we were up 13-12. It was a fast pace game, and a very good match up. Tapestry would go up a few points, but then the Baby Bisons would catch up and pass them. They continued to go back and forth, back and forth. Nick Barrus had 12 points in the game, Isa Habeeb with 9, Cameron Cole with 5, and Janesly Mercedes with 2. The game ended with the score of 30-28 Tapestry.
Please congratulate the team on a job well done and join us on Wednesday, December 18th at 3:30pm for our game against Nichols School.
Today the Baby Bisons had a game against Nichols. The starting lineup consisted of Nick Barrus, Sabina Bajgai, Cameron Cole, Isa Habeeb, and Christopher Martin. They were slightly intimidated by Nichols when they first walked in due to their height, but remained calm and positive. The game started off pretty quick and at the end of the first quarter the score was 8-2 in favor of the Bisons. After that the Baby Bisons took off. They were showing how well they can work together as a team. Michael Norris, and Elise Watson subbed in. Elise played great defense and had a steal, and Michael was still getting over some rookie year jitters, but was showing off what he has learned so far. At the half the score was 20-2. The third quarter began with Edward Bartnik, Moontaha Shalbi, Givon Blackwell, and Kassim Kassim making an appearance on the court along with Elise and Michael. Nichols scored 17 points in the third quarter. Isa, Cameron and Janesly Mercedes subbed into the game with the third quarter ending with an awesome block by Isa Habeeb that had our team and fans jaws dropped and cheering. It was a fun game to watch and we are very proud of the team. The final score was 34-19 Baby Bisons. Please Congratulate the team on a job well done. We hope you all enjoy the break and please join us after the New Year on January 8th, 2014 for our game against Tapestry at 3:30PM.
Yesterday was our first game back since break. We have had only a few practices to get back into the groove of things, and were a little rusty. We played against Aurora Waldorf, and it was back and forth the entire time. The other team was very intimidating with their size. After the 1st quarter the score was 11-9 Baby Bisons. Aurora Waldorf was playing a zone defense the kids really haven’t experienced much of, and were thrown off a bit. They were also not in their usual rhythm so during the quarters we tried to wake them up with some pep talk. They went back in the game and continued the battle ending the half up 17-15. We were hoping that some water and a bit of a break would shake them out of their funk. When the 3rd quarter started there were a couple of missed shots, and fouls that had the team frustrated, but they still held strong 23-21. During the 4th quarter Aurora Waldorf took the lead, and finally during the last minute we saw our usual spark. At the very end we were tied 30-30. The game was going into a 2 minute overtime. Overtime started with the jump ball landing right into the hands of the other team and they scored right away. We had a couple of turnovers and just couldn’t connect the ball with the hoop, causing frustration and the game ending 34-30 Aurora Waldorf.
Thank you to all who came out and supported the team, and please congratulate the Baby Bisons on a job well done. Please wish the Baby Bisons luck for their game in Rochester next week Thursday, and then join us Wednesday January 29th at 3:30 PM to support the Baby Bisons as we take on the Nardin girls team.
The Baby Bisons had a great time traveling to Rochester School for the Deaf. This group has never played in an away game before so they were all nervous, but excited. Even though the drive is a little over an hour, to them it felt like an eternity. We did something a bit different and announced the starting lineup which consisted of Christopher Martin, Cameron Cole, Isa Habeeb, Janesly Mercedes and Nick Barrus. Then the game began. Isa Habeeb won the jump ball getting it to Cameron Cole who scored. We are very proud of her because she is usually very timid when it comes to shooting, and has a tendency to pass it to another player. Nick Barrus was on fire scoring 8 of his 10 points in the first quarter. Isa Habeeb had some great rebounds despite having some kids about the same size as him. However, we had some problems with fouls. The quarter ended 12-4 SMSD. Elise Watson and Tyler Mondo-Goodrich subbed in for the second quarter. Elise did a great job on defense! She was boxing out the player she was defending so they wouldn’t get the rebound, and got a couple herself. Tyler was trying a position he hasn’t played before to give Isa a break, and did his best. Christian Lawrence subbed in and had a couple of great rebounds. The second quarter ended 20-10 SMSD. During half time we were able to go off to a side room which was different and fun for the kids. We discussed how we need to box out some more, work on not getting so many fouls, and just have fun. Moontaha Shalbi made an appearance in the game showing off her defensive talent. She was a bit confused on who she was guarding at first, but once she figured it out she was good to go. Elise Watson had a couple attempts at scoring a basket, but she couldn’t connect the shot. Sabina Bajgai also did a great job on defense, and had a great steal. Christopher Martin came into the third ready to show off some of his skills. He had some great moves, nice shots, scored 6 points, and avoided getting fouled (which was a problem for him in the first half). The third ended 28-19 SMSD. During the fourth quarter we focused on making better passes, which sometimes resulted in turnovers, and boxing out. The girls do a great job of it, and had many rebounds. Janesly Mercedes had a couple of steals, but her shots weren’t connecting. The game ended 32- 27 Baby Bisons. The kids were then treated to a pizza party with the other team, and a tour of the building. It was a great experience, and a lot of fun. Please congratulate the Baby Bisons on a job well done! Our next game is Wednesday, January 29th at 3:30pm against the Nardin Girls team, and we hope to see you there!
It has been 3 weeks since our last game due to the wonderful weather we have been experiencing. The kids were ready for some competition. Yesterday’s game was against the Nardin Boys team. We decided to change up some positions putting Cameron Cole in as point guard. She has shown great leadership skills, and once she becomes comfortable with the position she will shine. Nick Barrus was on a mission and scored 6 points in the first quarter, with Isa Habeeb, Christopher Martin, and Cameron Cole with 2 points each. The quarter ended 12-0. Christian Lawrence, and Sabina Bajgai subbed in along with Eddie Bartnik a little later on. Christian played his best game thus far. He knew what he had to do, and did it. Isa scored 5 points in the 2nd, and Cameron had 2, ending the half 19-10. During the 3rd quarter Moontaha Shalbi made an appearance showing off, once again, her boxing out skills, and she also had a rebound. Christian came out of nowhere at one point and blocked a shot that brought some of our fans to their feet. Nick Barrus had 5 points, and Christopher had 6 ending the quarter 30-14. During the 4th quarter the kids were showing off their passing, and rebounding skills. Michael Norris is becoming a lot more comfortable with what he is doing. We are happy with the hard work, effort, and improvement he has shown this season. The game ended 33-28. We played a 5th quarter with some notable mentions being Osama Abughanem with a great rebound, and steal, and Sara Rosario was great at rebounding and protecting the ball. Francis Nguyen knew where to go for the position he was told and was always on the move. There was some great passing plays where Nick would feed the ball to the others and they were able to move it around. James Kent almost made a basket. It was a fun game. Please Congratulate the team on a job well done. Enjoy the break. Our last game of will be Wednesday February 26th, 2014 at 3:30 in the New Gym. The game is a makeup against Tapestry and will be an exciting one. Please come and support the Baby Bisons for their last game of the season.
