Wednesday, December 2- SMSD vs. Elmwood Franklin
The Grade School Basketball Team kicked off the 2015-2016 season with an exciting game against Elmwood Franklin. Francis Nguyen put up our first basket for the season in the 1st quarter. However, Elmwood Franklin pushed past our defense to bring the score to 8-5 by the end of the half. Holding tight defensively helped the Baby Bisons in the 3rd quarter, with awesome rebounds by each of our players. By the 4th quarter, it was our time to shine. Michael Norris and Kioney Alvira-Jurado both scored in clutch moments. The books show a final score of 12-11 with Elmwood Franklin on top, but our Baby Bisons were the true winners. They put forth their best effort and hustled up and down the court throughout the game. We will be taking what we learned from our first game to practice and improve our skills for next week. Please come out and support us! We play against Waldorf on Wednesday, December 9th at 3:30pm in the Bosco Gym.
Wednesday, December 9-SMSD vs. Waldorf
The Grade School Basketball Team bravely took on The Waldorf School in an intense game yesterday. We faced quite the challenge as we battled against Waldorf’s tough defense and towering height the entire game. As the saying goes, “Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit”. That couldn’t be more true for our Baby Bisons. Despite a tough 24-4 loss, our team never gave up, hustling up and down the court until the final buzzer. Francis Nguyen and Kioney Alvira-Jurado fought their way to the basket to give our team well-earned points. We really appreciated everyone who came out to watch us, and hope the support continues! Our next game is against Elmwood Franklin on Wednesday, January 6th at 3:30pm in the Bosco Gym.
When you see our players, please congratulate them on a job well done!

The Grade School Basketball Team took on Elmwood Franklin in an exciting game yesterday. We started off a bit timid, missing rebounds and several key opportunities to drive to the basket. Elmwood Franklin’s aggressive style had them leading 7-4 at the end of the first half, with Kioney Alvira-Jurado and Francis Nyugen putting our only points on the board. However, the Baby Bisons really came alive in the second half. Our defense became more aggressive and we snagged some clutch steals that lead to offensive opportunities. Michael Norris used his height to his advantage and grabbed an impressive number of rebounds. He scored 12 points in the second half! Kioney Alvira-Jurado contributed 4 more points to bring our team to 20 total points. The fourth quarter had all of our hearts racing. The scoreboard had the Baby Bisons in the lead by a mere 2 points with less than a minute remaining. We were battling to see who would be victorious. The Bisons stayed strong and it looked like we had won at the final buzzer. We calmly celebrated and couldn’t be more proud of the humble sportsmanship our team displayed as we shook hands with the players and coach from Elmwood Franklin. However, upon further review, we realized the final result was actually a tie: 20-20. Every game presents an opportunity for our team to grow. Yesterday’s game taught us that it really doesn’t matter if we win, lose, or tie…it’s just fun to play. We are taking our positive attitude on the road next week to Rochester, where we will play in the I-90 Classic Tournament on Tuesday at 2:00 PM. Please wish us luck!
As always, thank you for all of your support! Go Bisons!

The Grade School Basketball team practiced hard in anticipation for yesterday’s game against Waldorf. We learned a different style of defense and new offensive plays to battle against this aggressive team. The Baby Bisons were ready for action. Despite a bit of confusion on the court for our players, we managed to keep the score close throughout the first half. Down only two points at halftime, we regrouped and noted what we needed to focus on for the second half. The third quarter was our time to shine. The Bisons charged up and down the court, using the fast pace to our advantage and tied the score up 18-18. Our players were exhausted heading into the fourth quarter, but they used every ounce of energy they had to keep the game close. Exciting steals and fast breaks peppered the last few minutes of the game as the lead bounced back and forth. Spectators were on the edge of their seats to watch as time ran out. At the final buzzer, we lost by one point, 25-24. Michael Norris deserves huge congratulations for an amazing game. Michael scored 20 points and helped our team throughout the entire game! Points aside, he had a good attitude and did not give up despite the frustratingly tough defense he was playing against. Please congratulate Michael and the entire Baby Bisons team on an impressive job well done!
Our next game is against Tapestry on Wednesday, January 27 at 3:30 pm in Bosco Gym. Come out and watch us play!
As always, thank you for all of your support! Go Bisons!

The Baby Bisons took on Tapestry in an incredibly fast-paced game yesterday. Both teams raced up and down the court with blazing speed throughout the first half. Michael Norris, Jonathan Allen, and Kioney Alvira-Jurado collectively earned SMSD 9 points in the first half. However, Tapestry managed to weave past our defense and was ahead with 17 points. Exhausted from sprinting up and down the court, the Baby Bisons rested and gathered themselves at halftime to focus on the upcoming half. Following advice and strategies from Coach LeRoy, our defense was much stronger in the third quarter. Francis Nguyen grabbed impressive rebounds to give us offensive opportunities. Michael Norris put up 9 points in the second half (and led the Baby Bisons with 15 total points!). At the final buzzer, Tapestry won with a final score of 27-20. Despite the intensity and speed that Tapestry brought to the game, the Baby Bisons never gave up. They displayed good attitudes and sportsmanship throughout the entire game, which is what really makes the coaches proud. We will be gearing up for another battle with Tapestry next week (on Wednesday, February 3 at 3:30pm in the Bosco Gym). Please come out and cheer us on!
As always, thank you for of your support!

The Grade School Basketball Team took on Tapestry for the second week in a row yesterday. We entered the game with a solid strategy and encouraging pep talk, knowing that this would be a tough game. Tapestry came out strong and quickly pulled ahead, but SMSD refused to give up. The Bisons tried their best to battle through Tapestry’s tough defense. Michael Norris, Kioney Alvira-Jurado, and Saul Alvira drove to the basket to give us some hard-earned points. (This was Saul’s first official basket for the Baby Bisons! Congratulations, Saul!) In the end, Tapestry won 43-10. However, this game provided an opportunity for us to grow as a team, trying new players in different positions and showing the Bisons the importance of working together. It’s hard to believe we only have two games left! We take on Nichols School next week (February 10th at 3:30 in Bosco Gym)--come cheer us on!
As always, thank you for all of your support! Go Bisons!

The Grade School Basketball Team took on Nichols in an electrifying game yesterday. Both teams raced up and down the court with lightning speed! Between impressive rebounds by Francis Nguyen and fast breaks to the basket by Michael Norris, the Baby Bisons were up 6-5 at the end of the first quarter! Nichols responded with impressive offensive plays in the second quarter to put them in the lead (13-8) at the end of the first half. SMSD stayed strong in the third and fourth quarters, but Nichols continued to put on the pressure. Michael Norris and Kioney Alvira-Jurado drove to the basket for some well-earned points, but it was not enough to outscore Nichols. The final score was 31-18. However, our players were all winners because of the perseverance and sportsmanship they each displayed. We shook hands with our heads held high and felt a sense of pride in how far we’ve come since the beginning of the season.
We only have one game left, and it’s certainly not one to miss! Wednesday, February 17th is our traditional Blue/ Gold Game. This year’s game is extra special because we will also be celebrating a birthday! The Bosco Gymnasium is turning 100 years old! At the end of our game, we will celebrate this historic event with a birthday party! We would love to see everyone come in their blue and gold to support our team and celebrate the Centennial Anniversary of Bosco Gymnasium!
As always, thank you for all of your support and encouragement! Go Bisons!

The Baby Bisons ended their season yesterday with the traditional Blue and Gold Game in Bosco Hall. The players were divided into two teams and played against each other in what was quite an exciting game! Representing the Blue Team (coached by Jeff LeRoy) was Kioney Alvira-Jurado, Tyler Phillips, Kearah Kelly, JJ Kent, and Emma Foster. Representing the Gold Team (coached by Beth Daley) was Saul Alvira, Abby Northway, Briona Zuppa, Julia Bronneberg, and Francis Nguyen. The game started off with some exciting plays for each team. The Gold Team took an early lead as Saul Alvira and Francis Nguyen put up some impressive points. However, the Blue Team battled back and soon was in the lead! Kioney Alvira-Jurado was unstoppable as she not only put up points herself, but also passed to teammates to let them shine. JJ Kent’s smooth shot earned him eight points and made him our top scorer of the game! The spotlight was shared as multiple players tried out their skills at the point guard position. The sportsmanship and teamwork displayed at the game was truly inspiring! Without any subs for some respite, it was up to each and every player to hustle up and down the court the entire time! Just as they were reaching the point of exhaustion, the game was stopped for a special celebration. Giant cakes were rolled in and the crowd gathered to celebrate Bosco Gym’s 100th birthday! The Baby Bisons led everyone in a special rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Bosco Gym. It was an honor to take part in such a historic celebration! We would like to extend a huge thank you to Jim Carmody for organizing the event and to Candice Erni for making the delicious cakes! We also want to thank everyone for cheering us on not only in yesterday’s game, but throughout our entire season! It would not have been nearly as exciting without all of your support and encouragement! As we get ready to hang up our uniforms, we can’t help but think that yesterday was the perfect way to bring the season to a close. Our players were practically bursting with pride (you should’ve seen the smiles on their faces)! Please take a moment to congratulate our basketball superstars for a great game and an awesome season the next time you see them!
Thanks again! GO BISONS!!!
