Academics

SMSD offers academic programming for students from birth through age 21.

Our Elementary Program services children from birth through the 5th grade. Additionally, we offer SNAP - Special Needs Achievement Program and Alternative classes for children with multiple disabilities.

Our Secondary Program consists of a middle school (6th - 8th grades) and high school (9th - 12th grades). For alternative learners, we offer a full array of modified academic classes, blended with vocational/occupational training.

Our comprehensive curriculum is aligned to NYS Learning Standards. SMSD offers a language rich environment by providing the students the necessary tools to think, learn and communicate through Total Communication. Total Communication is an educational philosophy that embraces all methods of communication including amplification (hearing aids, cochlear implants and assistive technology), speech, and auditory training, sign language, speech reading, voice, written English and visual imagery. This approach affords all our students 100% communication access.

We have a 100% graduation rate, and a 91% attendance rate.
